about

Sophia de Leon Sanchez (USA/Mex) and Gilles Aniorte-Tomassian (Fr/ Mex) started TheSophia3 by working remotely with musicians from around the world as a virtual United Nations of sounds but also as a visually complimentary project. The collective shows how art connects people regardless of backgrounds, distance, borders or walls and how the diversity in these global associations create distinct yet harmonious creative endeavours. .

A year into the pandemic, bandmates Sophia de Leon Sanchez (Chicago) and Gilles Aniorte-Tomassian (Mexico City) began covering old international pop tunes, mashing them up for the sake of it, but were also intrigued by these standards' poetic qualities that define time and place.

So, Sophia & Gilles invited Lucien Revolucien as the producer in residence and visual artist Claude Broquet into TheSophia3 collective to create 5 individual works based on the elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and the Ether and further added an ensemble of special guests from around the globe to experiment freely with the concept

Sophia's hypnotic voice and artistic range were a catalyst to Gilles's Serge Gainsbourg-like lyrical approach while Lucien created the right mood with beatz for Claude to frame his paintings around.

Young Damian El Diamantito del Norte set the tone with his interpretation on Son Jarocho music, a regional folk musical style of Mexican Son from Veracruz, with his singing on Volar, while Sophia was bringing back to life and drawing on the classic musical history of Harlem Jazz and especially the sounds of Billie Holiday and Buck Clayton. Gilles further added to this mix an inspired lyrical reimagination by recasting through music the 19th century flaneur wanderings and poetical musings of enfant terrible Charles Baudelaire by creating new nuances to these deeply rooted forms. These sonic experiments were also influenced by the philosophical practices and revolutionary techniques of the Situationist Dérive/drift by combating the everyday malaise with new attractions and encounters by using a collage of sounds to alter one's normal perceptions and expectations.

During one of their searching/ recording sessions, Heloise Yoo was invited to add a softly spoken Korean poem to the recordings and the mists of Waterfall came to life. From those holy waters emerged the fire of Lilith with lyrics and the voice of rockstar Michael Memmi drawing inspiration from the glamorous and decadent nightlife of 70's Paris with a dash of Vietnamese and Chinese spoken word by Hoa Hgoc Nguyen.

When it came the time for the Fifth Element and a closure on our spiritual voyage we drew on the talents of Rabi Gabriel Hagaiand and his poem,Yore Atta Yarad, sung in Hebrew with the ancient Sephardic pronunciation with in his voice intertwined with that of the angelical harmonies of Sophia.

In other words, a few beatz and some colors and this concept album mixes poetry, music and art for both listening and dancefloor enjoyment.

The Sophia 3, is an international open lineup, intercovid remote and in-site collaborations, from old tunes to eternity.
